Berlin Head Office

Since the move from Rome in 1832, the administration of the Deutsches Archäogisches Institut has been carried out from Berlin. This is where the main offices of the president and staff are located and where the main administration of the entire Institute is located. The Central Office has a natural sciences working group in the fields of paleobotany, archaeozoology, dendrochronology and radiocarbon dating , which cooperates with the other commissions and departments within the institute.

The library's collection concentrates on the field of Classical Archaeology.

Archives / Collections

The archives contain the records of the Institute and more than 250 bequests of important scholars of antiquity.

Im Zuge von Umzugsmaßnahmen des DAI im kommenden Jahr, können in der Zeit von Anfang Dezember bis Ende Januar leider keine externen Archivgäste im Archiv begrüßt werden. Für den gesamten Zeitraum können aber weiterhin schriftliche Anfragen bearbeitet werden. Interessenten werden gebeten sich in diesem Fall an archiv@dainst.de zu wenden.
Wir bitten um Verständnis dass es in der Beantwortung der Anfragen zu Verzögerungen kommen kann.
 

Department

The Architecture Department was set up in 1973 and is responsible for architectural research at excavation sites. The department aims to integrate the study of architecture with other disciplines of the study of antiquity. It also aims to forge closer contacts with the Institutes of Architectural History at Technical Universities and with specialized colleges where the next generation of scientists are studying, as well as to undertake its own excavation projects concentrating on architectural history.
The Scythian Department at the Berlin Head Office was established in 2003. It is devoted to the research of the Early Iron Age in Eurasia with major focal points in Siberia and Central Asia.  

Publications

The editing department supervises the journals, series and monographs published by the Head Office. It is contact with authors, editors and publishers and presents the publications of the Institute at fairs and conferences to the public. Among other supervising and coordinating tasks, the editing department lays down the guidelines for authors.

Public Relations

The public relations of the Berlin Head Office at the present time is being looked after by the Architecture Department. It arranges contacts with individual departments, commissions and foreign branches and produces the press releases. 

Building

The Institute is housed in a villa which was designed by the architect Peter Behrens for the archaeologist Theodor Wiegand. Another building was erected next to the villa in 1976 to house the library, and Redaktion and administrative offices. In 1983, a neighboring house was purchased for the Baghdad and Teheran Departments. A guest house for scholars (Lepsius-Kolleg) is located nearby.
