Cairo Department ﻋﺮﺑﻲ

Founded in 1907, the Deutsche Institut für ägyptische Altertumskunde became affiliated with the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut in 1929. Since 1957 the department is situated in a villa in Cairo-Zamalek. The area of research of the department encompasses more than 8,000 years of history ranging from the oldest prehistoric pharaonic culture to the Islamic period. In cooperation with Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, the Institute is engaged in various projects as well as in the documentation, scientific processing, publishing, and preservation of monuments and selected works of art in various museums in Egypt.

Library ﻋﺮﺒﻲ

The reference library comprises ca. 40,000 volumes and over 300 magazines and series currently. The focus is on Egyptology and associated sciences, complemented by an extensive collection of Islamic studies and an exquisite collection of travel literature. The estate of the Egyptologist Ludwig Keimer (1892-1957) provided the basis for the collection. The entire inventory up to 2007 is compiled in a database; for new acquisitions since 2007, see the central online catalogue ZENON. Both catalogues are available at Propylaeum.
Please note our new opening hours: Sunday 9 am - 4 pm, Monday - Thursday 9 am - 1 pm, closed on Friday & Saturday
The Library will be closed from April, 4th 2010 until April, 8th 2010.   

Photo Archives

Some 250,000 photos are included in the Institute's photo archives. 

Archives / Collections

The Institute's Archive contains mainly the scientific heritage of Ludwig Keimer (1892-1957) which is accessible in a separate room. Additional archival material is not yet documented. 

Publications

The »Mitteilungen des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts Kairo« appears yearly, also the series »Archäologische Veröffentlichungen«, Egyptian, Coptic and Islamic »Abhandlungen«, »Quellen zur Geschichte des Islamischen Ägyptens«, »Sonderschriften« and »Studien zur Archäologie und Geschichte Altägyptens« .

Abu Mina Early Christian pilgrimage centre, developed since the end of the 4th century A.D. at the tomb of St. Menas with several churches, pilgrimage centers and dwelling houses.

Die Archäometallurgie des Sinai, Ägypten Ein interdisziplinäres Gemeinschaftsprojekt zur Untersuchung der Frühen Kupfermetallurgie im Sinai und der Kupferversorgung des prädynastischen Ägyptens. Ziel ist eine Neubewertung des archäometallurgischen Potenzials im Sinai.
 
Dra' Abu el-Naga/Western Thebes The investigation of the necropoleis dating to the Middle Kingdom, Second Intermediate Period and Early New Kingdom. The discovery and documentation of royal tomb complexes dating to the 17th and early 18th dynasty.
 
Elephantine Examination of an ancient Egyptian settlement of the late 4th millennium BC up to the early medieval period. The head department of the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin is supervising the project.
