Previous Activities

Begun in the early 20th century by the Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften under A. Furtwängler and H. Bulle, research at Orchomenos has not been completed. At the present time a total of five volumes have appeared, however all concern the prehistoric periods (Neolithic to Mycenaean). In contrast, the monuments from the historical period (7th century to the Roman Imperial period) have yet to be researched. As the relevant notes of the excavator were burned in World War II, the entire documentation of the individual monuments must be carried out again. In 1997, under the direction of K. Fittschen, a new city map as well as detailed plans of individual buildings were drawn up. At least two further campaigns will be necessary in order to document the remaining monuments and findings (by and large they still need to be identified).
