The German Archaeological Institute awards scholarships in the area of archaeology and its related disciplines represented by the Institute. The requirement for the scholarship is a doctoral degree (graduate examination for architectural historians).
Travel scholarship
The German Archaeological Institute awards travel scholarships. Their purpose is the promotion of young scholars in archaeology and its related disciplines represented by the Institute. The scholarship recipients will gain a good knowledge of countries of the ancient cultural area (scholarship recipients of the Commission for General and Comparable Archaeology - in countries outside of the »Old World« as well), primarily of their archaeological and historical sites through a stay that is normally one year.
The application requirement is a doctoral degree and/or (for architectural historians) the graduate examination. Applicants should not have passed their thirtieth birthday at the time of the doctorate or passed their thirty-first birthday by the expiration of the closing date for applications; they must possess German citizenship. Applications are to be submitted by January 1st of the year.

Wülfing scholarship
The German Archaeological Institute awards the Wülfing scholarship to young scholars of archaeology. The scholarship offers an eight month stay in Mediterranean countries, Egypt and in the Near and Middle East for a general overview after a doctoral degree program. It can also be divided, if necessary.
Applications are to be submitted by January 31st of the year.
The following are to be submitted with the application: dissertation, doctoral certificate, CV, two academic references (in a sealed envelope), travel plan.

Foreign scholarship
The German Archaeological Institute awards scholarships to academics with professional experience at universities, museums or academic institutions in the area of the archaeological fields of study represented by it. The foreign scholarships should reinforce the foreign presence of German archaeological scholarship, advance research and deepen the connection to the scholars and institutions of the host country.

Munich
The Commission for Ancient History and Epigraphy of the German Archaeological Institute in Munich announces international scholarships four times a year for post-graduates in Ancient History. These scholarships allow study trips to their special library. Details can be found in the announcement.
Grants
Foreign scholar study trips in Germany
The German Archaeological Institute advances studies of foreign scholars in the area of archaeology and its related disciplines represented by the Institute through stays in Germany, preferably at the head office in Berlin and the commissions of the Institute in Frankfurt am Main, Bonn and Munich. The one or two month stays are to support research projects and deepen contacts with scholars and institutions abroad. Academics with residence abroad and other than German citizenship can be invited to participate in study trips at the German Archaeological Institute. Requirement is a completed degree in archaeology or its related disciplines represented by the Institute.
The Institute pays a daily allowance in the amount of 24 euros daily and a research grant of 4.12 euros daily for the length of the stay. It also assumes travel expenses, provides free accommodation in the guest rooms of the Institute and offers the opportunity of using the academic facilities of the Institute. Invitations come from the president of the German Archaeological Institute. In countries in which there is a foreign branch of the institute, a recommendation or a suggestion of the directors of the branch is received in advance.
Trips to the USA
The German Archaeological Institute awards grants for trips to the USA for studies in museums, other collections and libraries. These grants serve for the advancement of scholars in all subjects belonging to the working area of the German Archaeological Institute. A doctorate degree and appropriate professional experience at universities, museums or academic institutes are required for application. The applicants must possess German citizenship or, when they are foreign nationals, must be permanently employed at a research institution of the Federal Republic of Germany. The applications are to be submitted annually before February 1st and apply to the following year.
The USA travel grants are awarded by the directorship at the annual meeting; the length of the study trip and the amount of the financial grants are also determined here. The recipient of a USA study grant is obligated to submit a report to the president of the German Archaeological Institute after the end of the trip. The guidelines provide further details. AIA/DAI Fellowships
The Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) and the German Archaeological Institute (Deutsches Archäologisches Institut, or DAI) offer reciprocal study fellowships. The program encourages and supports scholarship on various aspects of archaeology and promotes contact between North American and German archaeologists.
Fellowship for Study in the United States
The AIA offers one post-doctoral research fellowship for archaeologists employed by the DAI, for use during the academic year (spring or fall) at either The Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) or The Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The Fellowship includes travel expenses for the Fellow, residence at university housing (at Brown University) or funds towards rental housing (at UCLA), library privileges, and an additional stipend towards living expenses. Residency will be for a maximum of three months, and no less than two months. Applicants who are archaeologists must have a Ph.D. degree; architects must have their diploma. Both must demonstrate professional competence in archaeology in their applications.
Fellows will be selected on the basis of scholarly promise as indicated by the applicant's academic record, prior publications, and the merits of the proposed research project. Preference will be given to applicants who are at an early stage of their professional careers. Candidates may indicate a preference for either Brown or UCLA, but the final decision will be made by the Selection Committee.
